The two sides are blaming each other for the attacks
BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan’s motorcade was vandalized and 10 people beaten up during his election campaign in Narsingdi’s Sadar upazila, allegedly by Awami League members.
On the other hand, the local Awami League leaders have alleged that their campaign offices were burned down by BNP men.
According to local police sources and party activists, Moyeen, accompanied by BNP activists on around 50 motorcycles and several cars, had arrived in Amdia Union’s Belab Bazar area for a public meeting on Tuesday afternoon when the attack took place.
BNP activists alleged that at least 10 motorcycles were vandalized and four stolen during the attack.
They alleged that 30-40 men led by Amdia Union Awami League Organizing Secretary Chhao Miah attacked the motorcade with sticks and other weapons.
“Ghorashal City Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nazmul Hossain Bhuiyan and nine others were injured in the attack,” upazila BNP General Secretary Saiful Islam said.
Chhao Miah’s phone was unreachable.
Moyeen Khan is BNP’s candidate for the Narsinghdi 2 constituency.
Amdia Union Awami League President Abdullah Ibne Rahid Mithu denied the allegations and said that it was Moyeen Khan who had brought hired goons, and vandalized and set fire to two Awami League campaign offices in Belab Bazar.
Pachdona Police Outpost in-charge SI Yusuf Miah said he was aware of arguments between Awami League and BNP activists in Meherpara over a procession, but had no news of the incidents in Belab Bazar.
