Assailants vandalized five to six vehicles
The motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came underattack in Thakurgaon on Tuesday as he was entering the district tocampaign for the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections.
Fakhrul is contesting the December 30 polls from Thakurgaon 1 constituency.
Confirming the incident,BNPpress wing official Shairul Kabir said the attack took place around 1pm on Tuesday as the BNP leader was on his way to his home district to start campaigning.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, district BNP Joint Secretary and Nargun Union Parishad Chairman Poygam Ali said: “Mirza Fakhrul was heading to Dinar Hat area from Saidpur Airportto meet voters around 1:15pm.He also had plans to visit his own constituency later.
“A group of assailants, led by Begunbari Union Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Bony Amin, blocked Fakhrul’s motorcade,"Ali claimed. "The gang attacked the motorcade when it tried to get past. They vandalized five to six vehicles and broke thewindows."
Poygam Ali continued: “Following the attack, Fakhrul directed his supporters to remain calm and told them to stay firm and patient against the government’s conspiracy to foil the elections.”
Till the filing of this report, Fakhrul was in the same area, speaking to BNP leaders, activists and local people.
Thakurgaon Sadar police Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman could not be reached over the phone despite several attempts.
