Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AKM Nurul Huda has said the commission is embarrassed over the recent attack on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul.
He also expressed shock over the murder of Awami Jubo League leader.
Nurul Huda made the comment at a briefing held during the conclusion of three-day Judicial Magistrates’ training session at the Election Commission building on Wednesday.
Expressing shock over the unexpected series of incidents, the CEC added that these occurrences have made the commission upset.
However, he did not say what initiative it has taken to bring the culprits to justice.
Addressing the program, AKM Nurul Huda said: “Life is more precious than any election. The cost of a human life far exceeds the cost of conducting election in 300 constituencies.
“We have to find a way to prevent such incidents in the future.”
He said: “We are urging leaders, activists and supporters of all political parties to keep their patience, and refrain from further disrupts during the election campaign. Please show respect for democratic and basic human rights, and do not engage in illegal and anti-election activities.”
The CEC said the upcoming 11th national election cannot be compared to any previous election, as voters this time will be able chose among around six candidates in each constituency, and more than 1,800 candidates throughout Bangladesh.
KM Nurul Huda continued: “We have to ensure a peaceful and fair environment for the election, and we have to assure people that the next election will not devolve into wanton violence.
“Election ensures people's right to vote, and a place for implementing democratic rights. The Election Commission has decentralized all administrative power to returning officers and judicial magistrates. A peaceful and stable election must be held under rule of law.”
The CEC also ordered judicial magistrates to show respect to each other and coordinate in order to ensure a peaceful election.
Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, Kabita Khanam, and commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, among others, were present at the program.
When was Fakhrul’s motorcade attacked?
The motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came under attack in Thakurgaon on Tuesday as he was entering the district to campaign for the upcoming elections.
Fakhrul is contesting the December 30 polls from Thakurgaon 1 constituency.
On the Other hand, Awami Jubo League leader Mohammad Hanif was shot and hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Noakhali Sadar upazila the same day.
