The civil society platform presents its analysis of candidates’ information

The present tense political atmosphere due to cases, attacks and harassment in the run-up to the 11th general election is leaving the people worried and in doubt about exercising their franchise, says SushasonerJonno Nagorik (Shujan).

The civil society platform has also alleged that many candidates are still unable to carry out their election campaigns because of attacks, obstructions and harassment.

Shujan came up with the claims on Monday at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka, where it presented the findings of analysis of information of 1,871 candidates contesting the December 30 polls from 300 constituencies across the country.

According to Shujan, the prerequisite favourable environment for a healthy competition before the election is yet to be created.

Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said: “We had called for dialogue among the political parties. Although the parties held talks, there was no compromise.

“We think the 11th general election is going to be a participatory one. But facing attacks, obstruction and harassment, many candidates are still unable to conduct their campaign overcoming fear and hesitation.”

He said that there was a lot of enthusiasm among the voters, but fear and doubt were clouding their hope to freely exercise their voting right because of the violent incidents that were taking place every day.

Badiul added that people were wondering whether they would be able to go to the polling centres and return home safely after casting their votes.“If they cannot do that, then the election will not be a participatory or neutral election.”

Shujan's Assistant Coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarker read out written statements regarding their analysis and findings at the press conference.

According to Shujan, a total of 1,871 candidates are contesting the parliamentary polls this time around. Information on 29 of them was unavailable.
