Posters of Sadek Khan are seen everywhere

By now, the voters in Dhaka-13 constituency have become all too familiar with hectic electioneering by Awami League Dhaka (North) city unit Secretary Sadek Khan but, rarely they witnessed any poll campaign by his main opponent Abdus Salam, BNP candidate and an advisor to Khaleda Zia.

Very few posters of the BNP candidate are found in the constituency.

The constituency comprises of Mohammadpur, Rayerbazar (partial), Adabor, Shekhertek, Basila, Shyamoli areas.

Some locals see Sadek’s edge as a local candidate as opposed to Salam, an outsider for this parliamentary seat.

A Swecchasebak Dal leader seeking anonymity said previously Salam was the deputy mayor of Dhaka. He was also general secretary of Dhaka city BNP. He has a clean image and the voters in the area believe that he will work for development in his constituency.

Awami League leaders and activists of the area were found erecting makeshift booths on the streets and lanes where they have pasted posters on walls for election campaign.

Posters of Sadek Khan are seen everywhere. A few posters of BNP candidate Abdus Salam and Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mohammad Murad Hossain were also found on electric pillars in Kaderabad housing and Namabazar areas.

Visiting the area, this reporter found existence of six candidates at the constituency including Awami League candidate Sadek Khan and BNP candidate Abdus Salam. The other four candidates are IAB candidate Murad Hossain, CPB’s Khan Ahsan Habib Lablu, Dulal Kanti Lal with TV and Mawlana Kamrul Ahsan with flower garland symbols.

Posters of the Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mohammad Murad Hossain were seen while CPB’s Khan Ahsan Habib Lablu’s posters were greater in number inside the constituency compared to that of BNP candidate in the area. Very few posters of BNP candidate were found at Monsurabad Housing and Baitul Aman Housing. Only three banners of DK Lal at the divider in front of Suchana community centre were found.

While visiting the area this reporter also found posters of Awami League candidate Sadek Khan pasted in each and every lane, besides streets and roads of the constituency are also gleaming with his posters. Posters of other candidates are hardly seen in the constituency.

A number of voters of the area said though roads underwent huge development in last decade, many of the roads are still in dilapidated condition. Drug addiction is another nagging problem.

“If any candidate guarantees of solving the existing problems, we will vote for him blindly,” said Abu Jar, a resident of Shyamoli area.

Unfortunately, none of the candidates have promised it yet, he said.

Awami League candidate is continuing his campaign with promises of developments. But he is yet to explain what sort of development he would do, he added.

Abdul Majid of Mansurabad Housing Society said: “We find Sadek Khan campaigning at the area but the other candidates are rarely seen.”

“Whatever the situation is, we are going to cast our vote after long days and we want to cast our vote safely,” said Mizanur Rahman of Bashbari area.

A trader of Krishi Market seeking anonymity said internal clash in the ruling party might have negative impact on the election.

Most of the ward commissioners reportedly have good connection with current law maker Jahangir Kabir Nanak. This time Awami League changed their candidate and nominated Sadek Khan.

Awami League might have more supporters at ward 33 and 34. But BNP has a good number of voters in the other four wards. If they can cast their votes properly it might go against the ruling party, the trader added.

Awami League candidate Sadek Khan said there is no dispute in their party and all the leaders under his constituency have already expressed their support towards him. And he found no reason to be defeated.

BNP candidate Abdus Salam said to contest in the election he has shifted to the area one year ago and has also taken an office, but his campaigning has been interrupted due to filing of fabricated cases filed against his supporters and hindrance being caused by the local Awami League leaders.

BNP Mohammadpur unit President Osman Gani has allegedly been picked up by plain cloth policemen from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area when he was returning from EC at Agargaon. The leaders and activists of the area said they are in fear of arrest and are unable to be present at the polling booths.

Salam however hoped to win the seat if the voters can cast their vote properly.
