BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, also the party candidate from Dhaka 3 constituency,  was attacked during his election rally in Chunkutia, Keraniganj on Tuesday evening.

BNP Chairperson's Press Wing Officer Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, claiming the attack was launched by Awami League supporters.

Gayeshwar has been admitted to Islami Bank Central Hospital in Kakrail after sustaining injuries in the incident.

BNP sources alleged that 30 other activists of the party were also injured in the attack and admitted to the hospital.

When contacted, Awami League candidate from Dhaka 3 constituency Nasrul Hamid said the incident occurred when an Awami League procession was passing by Gayeshwar Chandra Roy's campaign rally.

"When the two rallies were passing by each other, some BNP supporters began throwing stones at the Awami League supporters, and the Awami League supporters retaliated by throwing stones in return. One of the stones hit Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in the head," Nasrul said.

He added that it was not possible to tell who threw the stone due to the darkness, however, action will be taken against the culprit after investigation.

Nasrul further said he spoke with Gayeshwar over the phone after hearing news of the incident, and apologized for the unfortunate occurrence.

"I have never faced such a situation in previous elections," the Awami League leader said.

Nasrul Hamid is also the state minister of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as the incumbent MP in Dhaka 3 constituency.
