Fakhrul alleges Awami League is trying to intimidate voters to ensure they do not participate in the polls

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has complained that Awami League has ruined the election atmosphere with its violent actions; supported by a few administration officials.

He made these allegations while speaking to reporters, at his home in Thakurgaon, on Thursday.

Fakhrul said: “In the past few days, Awami League has attacked several senior BNP leaders. It is unfortunate that these criminals have carried out these attacks with the support of several police and administration officials.

“Awami League is worsening the election atmosphere to intimidate voters into not visiting the polling booth on voting day.”

Discussing the election atmosphere in Thakurgaon, Fakhrul further alleged: “I visited Thakurgaon just a few days ago, and the situation was much better.

“However, during this visit, I witnessed Awami League criminals carrying machetes and threatening voters, door-to-door, asking them not to visit the polling centres. They might be doing this because it is my constituency.”

Fakhrul also alleged that Awami League is instigating communal strife to prevent BNP from campaigning in the upcoming election.

“However, BNP will contest the election regardless of the situation. We want to showcase the fact that a free and fair election can never be possible under the incumbent Awami League government.”

Several BNP leaders were present at Mirza Fakhrul’s home while he spoke to reporters. Later in the day, went to Saidpur Airport to board a flight to Dhaka.

The 11th parliamentary election is slated for December 30.
