Polling officers attacked, ballots snatched in Noakhali

Seven election officials were injured

A polling centre was attacked and ballot papers and boxes snatched in Noakhali’s Sonaimuri on the eve of the general elections.

Seven polling officers, including Presiding Officer Mahmudul Hasan, the upazila family planning officer, were injured in the attack around 10:30pm Saturday, said Sonaimuri police Officer-in-Charge Abdus Samad.

The incident took place at Nateswar union’s Maddhya Nateswar Ebtedayii Nurani Madrasa polling centre.

Mahmudul, who is critically injured, was admitted to Noakhali General Hospital and later sent to Dhaka by an ambulance.

The OC said the attack was carried out by BNP and Jamaat men. He said the attackers had snatched polling materials from the officials.

District Superintendent of Police Ilias Sharif is visiting the spot.
