The upbeat upazila election atmosphere is tangible in Narsingdi district and nationwide
With the conclusion of the 11th general election, Awami League’s aspiring candidates for chairman have been preparing for the upazila parishad election in six upazilas of Narsingdi.
The names of some of the contenders have already been announced as activists want to see their favourite leaders as chairmen. Potential candidates have also started lobbying in their party’s electoral areas.
However, no instructions have been given regarding the upazila parishad elections by the party’s central unit, according to the district Awami League.
Awami League activists said those who are willing to be candidates in the upazila election are already mentally prepared. Once the general election ended smoothly, the upbeat election atmosphere remained in Narsingdi as well as the whole country.
Once the Election Commission announced the election manifesto, prospective contenders started lobbying for their respective parties.
The candidates who have declared they are in the running for the upazila chairman’s position in the upazilas, for the election, are: Narsingdi sadar upazila Awami League General Secretary and former chairman of Chinishpur Union Parishad Aftab Uddin Bhuiyan; sadar upazila Awami League President Safar Ali Bhuiyan; Madhabdi city Awami League President Salah Uddin Ahmed; and expatriate businessman of Sweden, Ataur Rahman, in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila.
Aftab Uddin Bhuiyan said: “Participation in the upazila election will involve using the party symbol. If the party nominates the candidate based on the desires of grassroots voters, then I am optimistic that I will receive the nomination.”
In Palash upazila, the anticipated candidates are Chairman and upazila Juba League President Syed Javed Hossain; and upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary and Community Policing Committee President Abdul Ali Bhuiyan.
From Shibpur upazila, prospective candidates are: upazila Awami League President Harun or Rashid Khan, General Secretary Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan Rakhil, former upazila General Secretary Farhad Alam Bhuiyan, and central Krishak League Vice-President Nur Uddin Molla.
Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan Rakhil said: “I have been working, adhering to the party’s policies, for a long time. Therefore, grassroots leaders and workers want me to participate.”
In Monohardi upazila, the expected candidates are: Chairman Saiful Islam Khan Biru, upazila Awami League President Advocate Fazlul Haque, Vice President Habibur Rahman Rangu, General Secretary Priyasish Rai, Joint General Secretary Asaduzzaman Apel, Mollah Zahirul Islam Mukul, Lion Jahangir Alam, and Samsunnahar Emily.
In Belab Upazila, the names under discussion are upazila Awami League President and former upazila Chairman Shamsher Zaman Bhuiyan Riton; and Joint Secretary Sharif Uddin Khan Momen.
Sharif Uddin Khan Momen said he also hopes to receive the nomination as he has been working in the party for a long time.
Other contenders include: incumbent Chairman Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, upazila Awami League President Afzal Hossain, General Secretary Abdus Sadek, former Chairman of Srinagar Union Parishad Riaz Morshed Khan Russell, Raipura municipal Awami League President Mahbub Alam Shahin from Raipura upazila.
Commenting on the matter, district Awami League General Secretary Abdul Matin Bhuiyan said: “Many have been running campaigns on social media sites expressing their desire to be candidates in the upcoming upazila election.
“However, the potential candidates have not informed us of anything.”
The Election Commission (EC) wants to hold the Upazila Parishad election across Bangladesh in March. Secretary Helaluddin Ahmad announced this to reporters on January 2 (Wednesday) at the Election Commission building.
Nonetheless, this time, candidates will participate in the upazila election using the party’s symbol.
