Awami League candidates have been reported to take the lead in the 78 upazila parishad polls on Sunday in 12 districts across the country while sporadic irregularities were reported.

The size of the electorate in the 78 upazilas is 1,42,48,850 under 5,847 polling stations across 12 districts - Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Natore and Rajshahi.

Around 207 chairman candidates, 386 vice-chairman candidates and 249 woman vice-chairman candidates are contesting the first of the five phases of the polls.

Another 15 chairman candidates, six vice-chairman contenders and seven woman vice-chairman contestants have already been elected unopposed.

Awami League candidates were declared victors in all eight upazilas, where they won two unopposed.

However, voting was not smooth, as irregularities were reported throughout the day.

Returning Officer Mashiur Rahman said voting was suspended in Al Jamiatus Salafia Alim Madrasa centre in Godagari around 12:45pm due to stuffing of ballot boxes.

An assistant presiding officer and two polling agents were detained.

Four people were injured during clashes between supporters of two rival candidates at two voting centers of Bagatipara upazila in Natore.

The incidents occurred at the Jigri High School and Bhatopara voting centres, hours after voting in the UP polls began on Sunday.

Wahidul Islam Gokul, an independent candidate in Bagatipara upazila, claimed: “Supporters of Awami League Candidate Sekendar Ali attacked my followers and beat up four people, including a woman. They also attacked my followers at the nearby Bhatopara centre. Police later rushed to the spot and contained the situation,” he added.

Voting in five polling centres in Ulipur, Nageswari and Roumari upazilas in Kurigram district was postponed due to allegations of unlawful activities outside the jurisdiction of the presiding officers.

Roumari UNO Dipankar Roy confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday afternoon.

Voting at Mahmudpur Government Primary School polling centre under ward No 1 in Sadar municipality was suspended following allegations of irregularities.

Presiding Officer Anwar Hossain said voting was suspended at 2:30am as some local influential people were forcing them to stuff ballot boxes in the early hours.

Following a written complaint by the presiding officer, Returning Officer Abdul Hossain and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Rahmat Ullah visited the centre and suspended the votes.

Meanwhile, Anwar and two Assistant Presiding Officers - Abdul Alim and Belal Hossain - were detained for interrogation.

Voting at a polling station of Azmirigang upazila was suspended after some miscreants snatched ballot papers.
