Winning councillor of municipality election reportedly led the vandalism
At least 16 houses were vandalized amid Bhunapur municipality post-election violence in Kutubpur village in Tangail.
On Saturday night, after the announcement of the results, houses of opposition councillor candidate Zahidul Islam and supporters were vandalized, which was reportedly led by Anwar Hossain, the winning councilor candidate of Ward-1 of the municipality.
Houses of Zahidul Islam and his supporters – Azhar, Shamsul, Jalil, Mannan, Sadeq, Amzad, Anwar, Shahiduzzaman, Shamsuzzaman, Saiful, Sabur, Momen, Karim member, and Sattar, were reportedly attacked and vandalized multiple times.
According to local sources, clashes broke out between the supporters of Zahidul and Anwar on Saturday, over the fake votes cast for Anwar Hossain in the municipal elections.
At least 10 people were injured on both sides.
Suchi Begum, a supporter of Zahid, was heavily injured, as her thumb was torn apart by a sharp weapon during the clash.
She is currently undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
Upon receiving the news of the vandalism, the police reached the spot immediately and brought the situation under control.
Police are currently monitoring the activities in the village to avoid renewed violence.
In this regard, Bhunapur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rashidul Islam said: “The incident took place in Kutubpur village in the post-municipal violence. I have received a complaint. Necessary steps will be taken after investigation.”
