Brac has set up a month-long emergency relief programme to support flash flood victims in haor areas. Through the emergency aid programme, Brac aims to support 50,000 families over the next one month with Tk15cr to help them cope with the immediate effects of the calamity on their crops and livelihoods, a press statement released on Thursday said. A result of sudden downpours, flash floods have continued for nearly three weeks, hampering the lives and livelihoods of the haor residents. The aid will be distributed in four districts – Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Netrokona – in coordination with their local government authorities. Considering the fast deteriorating situation and spread of floodwaters in the haor areas in the last 48 hours, Brac undertook this flood relief programme in addition to its regular relief programmes. Brac Disaster Management and Climate Change Programme Director Gawher Nayeem Wahra said: “The situation has rapidly deteriorated in the last 48 hours. “A new crisis has also emerged as fish and ducks are also dying, in addition to the widespread flooding of crops,” she said. “This effort will support families to cope with the immediate crisis,” she added.
