Minister blames climate change for flash flood in Haor
Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud has blamed climate change for the recent flash flood in the Haor areas in Bangladesh. “Water Development Board cannot do anything regarding the flood in Haor areas as it is a result of climate change in Bangladesh,” he said while addressing a press briefing at secretariat on Sunday. The minister said: “After finding some irregularities in embankment reparation projects last year, we halted 50% of the payment. “Two probe teams are working to find out if such irregularities took place even this year.” One of the probe teams is being lead by Water Resources Ministry Joint Secretary Khalilur Rahman while the other is being led by Water Development Board’s Additional Director General Momtaz Uddin, reports Bangla Tribune. The minister said a Tk60 crore project has been taken up to build new embankments and mend the old ones. Replying to a query, he said: “I read in a newspaper that there is uranium in the water coming from Meghalaya and that water has got mixed with the Haor water. “We will decide on our next step once Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission submits its report regarding the matter.” Earlier in the day, a team from Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) said no signs of radioactivity were found in Haor water of Sunamganj. On Saturday, a team of Dhaka University teachers visited the Haor areas to investigate the reason behind water contamination that led to death of fishes and ducks following the recent flash flood. They examined the water quality, dead fishes and rotten paddy in Hakaluki Haor. On Friday, separate teams of Fisheries Ministry and Fisheries Research Institute of Mymensingh and Chandpur visited the Haor areas to assess the situation has raised concerns among farmers who have lost their half-ripe paddy in the flood. Primarily, they identified the presence of ammonia gas and fall in oxygen level in the water as possible reasons behind the deaths of fishes and ducks.
