The High Court (HC) has upheld a verdict that declared extraction of white clay illegal in three spots of Netrokona’s Durgapur upazila.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the verdict on Wednesday following a writ petition of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), says a press release.
Bela identified 10 companies had been extracting white clay from the areas without any lease and with no environmental clearance.
Later, it filed a writ petition in 2015 challenging the legality of the unauthorised cutting of hills and hillocks, and indiscriminate extraction of white clay from Arapara, Panchkahaniya and Maizpur mouzas of the upazila.
The High Court, after hearing on the writ, ordered the government to immediately stop illegal white clay extraction from three mouzas of Netrokona on March 14, 2016.
