Speakers at a program have stressed the need for raising awareness and teaching moral values, strict implementation of existing laws and social movements with political commitment to curb violence against women and children.

They were speaking at a seminar titled “Responsibilities of the Civil Society and State to Prevent Violence and Rape Against Women and Children”, organized by Dhaka University Friends Association (Dufa) in Dhaka’s CIRDAP auditorium on Saturday.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, who was present as a chief guest, said more studies should be conducted on criminals to find out the cause of such heinous crimes against women.

Sanjida Khan Ripa, Barrister Kamrun Mahmud Dipa and Zahidul Kabir Titu presented the keynote paper “Violence and rape against women and children: Current situation and way forward” at the seminar.

In the keynote paper Sanjida Khan said rape and violence against women and children increased alarmingly but no case was filed in most of the incidents.

Students who come to Dhaka from rural areas mainly become victims of sexual and digital harassment, she said.

Rights activist Khushi Kabir said 5.7% of the country’s children are subjected to sexual violence before reaching age 10.

She said while the country is showing great advancement in women empowerment, with 900,000 women added to the workforce in 2017, their safety are getting worsened day by day.

Khushi said women’s participation in various sectors of the society should be increased and this will help change the attitude of the people towards them.

She also suggested teaching moral values at home.

Advocate Zainul Abedin, who was present at the event as a special guest, said good governance and accountability should be ensured at all levels to prevent violence and rape of women.

He stressed on controlling negative aspects of social media.

DUFA President AKM Enayet Hossain presided over the program.
