The debating community of the entire nation are waiting with bated breath for Ascension 2018.
To help with the frenzy of last-minute practice before Ascension, Bangladesh’s veteran debater and teacher of the10 Minute School Sakib Bin Rashid and 2017 Asian British Parliamentary (ABP) champion Rawnak Zaheen Wasi organized a British Parliamentary(BP) format preparatory session at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) for school and college students yesterday.
Ascension 2018 will follow the BP format.
Champion debaters of the Bangladeshi debate circuit Rakib Rahman, Aaqib Farhan Hossain, Asif Mehedi Adi and Yasin Shafi were also present at the session, along with president of Bangladesh Debating Council Fardeen Ameen.
Over 40 students were in attendance, where two practice debates were held following informative lectures on the BP format by Sakib and Rawnak.
Sakib in response to the importance of arranging such pre-tournament practice said: “I think Ascension is the biggest debating event that has ever happened in this country. It is a great opportunity for new debaters to learn from such a big tournament.
“The best way to maximize or utilize this opportunity is by preparing well. As this is a 116-team mega tournament I wanted the people who are specifically from the Bangla debating community to have adequate preparation.
“I come from a Bangla debating community myself, so I know the challenges. I wanted to ensure that those who are very new to the English and BP debate, goes into Ascension with some semblance of familiarity with the structure of speeches and debates they will face,” Sakib also added.
Last year’s ABP champion Rawnak shared this thoughts about battling in an international tournament, “International tournaments are very different in the sense that you compete against people who usually don’t see. When you get into a tournament which is a regional major like ABP or UADC or Ascension, you will see a lot of adjudicators, whom you have never seen.
“I think it is an overwhelming experience, but also enjoyable. It is a fresh exposure to a new circuit and you learn a great deal as a debater. Attending such tournaments is necessary in your learning as a debater, and boosts your development a great deal.”
