Politicians, journalists, and eminent citizens have raised their voice against militancy and communal violence saying Bangladesh will be a global leader in preventing terrorism and militancy.

Speakers made the vows at a peace meeting against militancy and communal terrorism, organized by the 14-Party Alliance at Awami League headquarters on Bangabandhu Avenue, on Tuesday.

Leaders from the ruling Awami League and 14-Party Alliance, actors, academicians, and journalists, were present at the meeting with Awami League presidium member and Grand Alliance spokesperson, Mohammed Nasim, in the chair.

Nasim said Bangladesh will be a global leader in preventing militancy and communal terrorism.

He also thanked BNP leaders for joining parliament and said: “We are very happy. We urge BNP lawmakers to come forward to strengthen Sheikh Hasina's hand in fighting militancy and terrorism.”

Former health minister, Mohammed Nasim, said: "We have always been fighting against terrorism under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. We have repeatedly won. Now, while the world is experiencing deadly terrorist attacks, we are also fighting, and we hope that we can move towards a terrorism-free and peaceful world.”

He added that militants do not have any religion or country.

“Terrorism will be eliminated from the country at all costs. I want to see a non-violent Bangladesh,” Nasim said.

Matia Chowdhury, Awami League presidium member, said: "The student community, journalists, and political leaders led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will have to stand against militancy together.”

Awami League presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru said the common people of Bangladesh are not militants or terrorists. Militancy is also not a problem at home only, but a global issue.

We have to tackle this problem globally, regardless of party lines, he said.

Eminent writer, Syed Abul Maksud, calling upon everyone to take responsibility from their respective positions in counteracting militancy, said terrorism has appeared in countries which are democratic and non-communal.

“Militancy-terrorism cannot be eliminated by just government, law enforcement agencies, or administration. All citizens have to tackle this problem,” he said.

Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President, Shahriar Kabir, Dhaka University’s former vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, and others were present at the meeting.
