Dhaka Tribune, one of the leading and fastest growing English dailies in Bangladesh, celebrated six years of publication with a vibrant and colourful event on Friday.

Marking the occasion, a reception program was held at a Dhaka hotel, where Dhaka Tribune Editor Zafar Sobhan highlighted some outstanding achievements of the newspaper so far.

In his speech, Zafar Sobhan said: “I am thankful to everyone who has been with us throughout our journey so far. At Dhaka Tribune, we truly believe in Bangladesh. We are not value neutral. We are not simply dispassionate and disinterested reporters of the news. Our mission is far greater than that. We are here to help build Bangladesh.

“As Bangladesh breaks barriers, Dhaka Tribune will be there by its side, breaking the news of the barriers that are being broken, and breaking barriers of our own in terms of quality of reporting and acuity of insight,” he added.

Pledging to do everything possible to help Bangladesh towards its goal of peace and prosperity, he said Dhaka Tribune aspires to“tell the stories that no one else is telling, and giving a voice to the voiceless.”

Speaking as chief guest, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said the newspaper has earned the faith of the people over the last six years.

“It is working as the mirror of society and the country,” he added.

Referring to the government’s Vision 2021 and 2041, he said: “We all have to work together, and the media has a vital role in this journey. We believe in criticism. We believe criticism is essential to running the country properly. Criticism helps the government help the country in a better manner.”

Dhaka Tribune Publisher Kazi Anis Ahmed expressed his hope that the newspaper would continue being at the forefront of journalism, as it has been for the past six years.

He also gave credit to the newspaper’s journalists and employees for the remarkable journey that Dhaka Tribune has been on in the field of journalism.

“We believe six years is not a long time in the life of an institution, but Dhaka Tribune has managed to traverse quite a distance over the period,” he said.

“We have been there through many events; some of them were grim. We saw many milestones of national development,” the Dhaka Tribune publisher added, also thanking the newspaper’s readers.

“As a newspaper we will, of course, keep doing the critical stories when, where, and as needed. But the real job of a newspaper is not only to tell critical stories, but to tell the full story in an objective manner,” he said.

Referring to various success stories of the country, especially in the fields of economy, infrastructural development, and counter-terrorism, Kazi Anis further said: “There is a lot to celebrate in Bangladesh. It is important that we tell these stories too. Because if we don’t tell our story, how can we expect the world to?”

Currently, with the theme “Breaking News, Breaking Barriers,” Dhaka Tribune is one of the most popular print and online media outlets in the country. Only five days after the newspaper was launched on April 19, 2013, its reporters and photographers were at the scene of the Rana Plaza disaster, and they have since covered many major stories with global impact and resonance, such as the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Besides top-notch news coverage, Dhaka Tribune is also well known for its award-winning marketing campaigns, such as “Glad to be a Bangladeshi” and “I’m made in Bangladesh.”

At the reception function, the chief guest, along with the Dhaka Tribune editor and publisher, handed over the Dhaka Tribune Special Recognition Award to 10 of its best employees, for their long-standing excellence and devotion to duty in service of the newspaper.

The winners are Chief Photographer Syed Zakir Hossain, Chief Reporter Syed Samiul Basher Anik, Online Editor and Assistant News Editor Tilka Binte Mehtab, Production Editor Towsif Osman, Editor Editorial & Op-Ed Abak Hussain, Feature Editor Sabrina Fatma Ahmad, Chief Reporter (Business) Ibrahim Hossain, Graphics Editor Asmaul Hoque Mamun, Assistant Manager (HR) Muhid Bhuiya and Assistant Manager (Admin) Md Fazlee Rabbi.

Dhaka Tribune board member Kazi Inam Ahmed was also in attendance at the event, as well as politicians, academics, corporate personalities, foreign dignitaries, journalists, showbiz personalities, and development workers, among others.
