
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi paid respects to the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during Bangladesh's Liberation War.
“At 3:30 PM today, PM Sheikh Hasina & I will join a programme to honour Indian soldiers martyred in the 1971 war, at the Manekshaw Centre,” Modi tweeted on Saturday morning.
India stood by Banglaees' struggle for freedom and played a key role in its independence. It took in an estimated 10 million refugees from Bangladesh. Indian soldiers also fought alongside Mukti Bahini during the 1971 war.
Modi said the Bangladesh government's decision to honour the martyred Indian soldiers has “deeply touched the people of India.”
“Every Indian takes pride in the knowledge that Indian soldiers and Bir muktijoddhas fought together to liberate Bangladesh from the rein of terror,” he said at a joint press briefing.

Sheikh Hasina is on a four-day visit to India.
In her speech, the prime minister said: “India made invaluable contribution in our War of Liberation, for which we are grateful.
“Today in the afternoon, we are happy to honour the martyred of Indian armed forces who lost their lives for our War of Liberation in 1971.”
