PM Hasina briefs media on India visit
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called her visit to India a success on Tuesday, while elaborating on the various deals signed during the trip at a press briefing in Ganabhaban. 11 deals and 24 MoUs were signed between the public and private sectors of Bangladesh and India during the visit, with the notable exception of the Teesta water-sharing agreement. [arve url="https://www.facebook.com/awamileague.1949/videos/627316847458177/"/] “We are downstream, so water will come to Bangladesh. None can stop the flow of water from Teesta,” the Prime Minister said. “During the rainy season they’ll have no option to stop water flow. We have to take initiatives to reserve Teesta water so that we can use it during the dry season” Regarding West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that there was not enough water in the Teesta to share, Sheikh Hasina said: “I have proposed another alternative option to her (Mamata). I asked her to reserve other rivers' water in Teesta , then she may share that water with us.” Regardless of the Teesta deal, Hasina said that relations between India and Bangladesh had gained momentum following the state visit. “I have invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Bangladesh next year,” Hasina said, adding she was surprised that her Indian counterpart had come to the airport to receive her. When questioned on defence deals with India, the Bangladesh premier said: “We have defence MoUs with Singapore, USA, UK, Turkey, South Korea...we buy defence hardware from several countries according to our needs. So, I do not know why there are so many questions in this regard.” “I will never sign any deal which is against the interests of our country,” Sheikh Hasina added.
