The governor briefed the foreign minister on the historic importance of the capital in the region, St Petersburg, a city built by Tsar Peter the Great, a press release stated.
Drozdenko further briefed him on the growing economic importance of the city as the trade and transit hub of eastern and western parts of Europe.
Regarding trade, Foreign Minister Ali said that Bangladeshi export items such as pharmaceuticals, ocean-going vessels, leather goods, potatoes, fragrant rice, and tea, especially organic tea, are popular in various European countries and foresee good potential in Russia as well.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of a joint shipbuilding venture to produce medium-sized vessels and fishing trawlers.
Drozdenko particularly expressed desire to recruit skilled professionals, especially medical doctors, from Bangladesh.
Citing the historic value of St Petersburg’s architectural beauty and its role as a major Russian port, Foreign Minister Ali proposed to make Chittagong its twin city.
He invited Drozdenko to visit Bangladesh with a business delegation and the governor accepted.
