The recognition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic March 7, 1971, speech as part of the world’s documentary heritage will be celebrated in Agartala, the capital of Indian state of Tripura.
Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, assistant high commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala, confirmed the matter to local reporters.
“The residents of Agartala stood by Bangladesh during the testing time [in 1971],” he said.
“And now Bangladesh seeks Agartala’s company at this joyous moment. As part of the celebration, a colourful procession will be brought out across Agartala city.”
UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova announced that Bangabandhu’s speech was included as part of the world’s documentary heritage at its headquarters in Paris on October 30.
The Memory of the World International Register is a list of documents, maintained by UNESCO, that was created to ensure preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage in various parts of the world.
Shakhawat said around 80 Bangladeshi diplomatic missions across the world will celebrate the recognition through numerous events on Saturday.
Artists from Tripura will also participate in the procession in Agartala.
On Sunday, a Baul festival will be organised at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhaban in Agartala, where leading folk singers from Bangladesh are expected to perform.
