The Australian government has issued a travel alert for Bangladesh, urging those who plan to go to the country in the near future to reconsider.
The alert was posted on the Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade Department's official travel advice website-
Smartraveller.gov.au - on December 13.
According to the website, there is "reliable information to suggest militants may be planning to target Western interests in Bangladesh."
It adds that days of national significance, such as the upcoming Victory Day on December 16, provide opportunities to terrorists for the launching of attacks.
The alert further says that those who still wish to travel to Bangladesh should take additional security measures, though travel to the country is heavily not recommended.
The alert also said: "Criminal violence and armed robberies are common in Bangladesh, including in the Banani, Baridhara and Gulshan areas of Dhaka where resident expatriates have been victims of robbery, pickpocketing and snatch and grab attacks."
