Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to West Bengal last week has been very successful in further strengthening the historical, cultural and people-to-people relations between Bangladesh and India, says the Bangladesh high commissioner to India.
Syed Muazzem Ali’s remarks came during an interaction with members of Indian Women's Press Corps at its office in New Delhi on Thursday, said a press release from the high commission on Friday.
During her May 25-26 visit, Hasina attended a special convocation at Visva-Bharati University along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
She and Modi jointly inaugurated the newly built Bangladesh Bhavan at Santiniketan and later held exclusive talks there.
The Bhavan, built by Bangladesh, will go a long way in conducting research on Rabindranath Tagore and strengthening the cultural ties between the two countries, said the press release.
At Asansol, Hasina also attended the third convocation of Kazi Nazrul University where she received the honorary Doctor of Literature degree.
Later in Kolkata, she visited the historic “Jorasanko Thakur Bari” and Netaji Subhash Museum, apart from holding an exclusive meeting with Mamata.
During the press meet, Muazzem quoted the prime minister as saying that Dhaka and New Delhi were having golden days in their relations in the spirit that existed during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.
Both Hasina and Modi voiced optimism in taking the highly cordial bilateral relations to a new height.
They both expressed the hope that the two closest neighbours would keep their relations up for the welfare of their peoples and mutual economic, commercial, cultural development.
Responding to a question on the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the high commissioner thanked India for providing humanitarian assistance to the persecuted people.
He said India was also supporting Bangladesh in the sustainable and safe repatriation of the refugees to their homeland, Rakhine state of Myanmar.
