Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali is set to begin his four-day visit to Myanmar on Thursday, to discuss progress on Rohingya repatriation with Myanmar leadership.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and members of the joint working group on Rohingya repatriation will accompany the foreign minister during the visit, reports UNB.
AH Mahmood Ali is scheduled to leave Dhaka for Myanmar at 11:55pm on Wednesday, an official said.
In addition to holding meetings with Myanmar leaders, the foreign minister is likely to visit Northern Rakhine.
On Tuesday, Bangladesh and Japan shared five specific proposals to find an early solution to the Rohingya crisis ensuring the safe, voluntary, and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Earlier, Minister Kono shared the five proposals with Myanmar, who gladly accepted the proposals.
UNHCR and UNDP on Wednesday urged Myanmar authorities to make tangible progress on conditions in Rakhine State.
The call came within two months of the signing of the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNHCR, UNDP, and the government of Myanmar.
In line with the MoU, root causes of the Rohingya crisis need to be addressed by implementing the recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, including a clear, voluntary, and equal pathway to citizenship for all eligible individuals.
In a letter to the council circulated on Tuesday, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN, Masud Bin Momen, said the Bangladesh government continues to engage with Myanmar in good faith, but "we regret that the necessary conditions for a safe and sustainable return do not exist in Myanmar, nor has Myanmar made any demonstrable efforts to address the concerns of the Rohingyas and the international community."
Momen urged the Security Council to adopt a resolution and take "concerted and determined action to address the Rohingya crisis" so the refugees in Bangladesh can return to Myanmar, according to a report by AP.
The UN Security Council is planning to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Myanmar's violent crackdown on the Rohingya at an open meeting on August 28, which will be addressed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, among others.
