The government is going to stop the broadcasting of local commercials on foreign television channels from April 1, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said.

"Running commercials on foreign channels is a punishable offence," he told cable operators."Legal actions will be taken from the first day of April to stop such practice."

The minister came up with the restriction, while speaking at a seminar,” Private Television in Crisis”, arranged by Broadcast Journalist Centre, at the Shilpakala Academy, on Saturday.

"Some local companies are running advertisements on foreign channels that have become popular in Bangladesh," Mahmud said.

"This practice is harming local television channels. We hope that the local channels will see a rise in business, of Tk 300-500 crore annually, once this directive is implemented," he said.

The government had served notices several times, to the authorities concerned, to stop airing advertisements on foreign TV channels.

Minister Mahmud hoped, the operators will take necessary preparations to carry out the order. "We have already issued two circulars in this regard. We want to implement our decision from April 1," he said.
