President, PM condemn Sri Lanka attack

The grandson of Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, are among more than 200 people killed in a series of bomb blasts in Colombo

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have condemned the horrific terror attack in Colombo, Sri Lanka and expressed their condolences to those who lost their lives in the series of bomb attacks.

Easter Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and three luxury hotels killed at least 207 people and wounded more than 400, hospital and police officials said.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, President M Abdul Hamid said: “We are deeply shocked to learn of the bomb blasts in Sri Lanka. We strongly condemn this heinous act of terrorism.”

He also conveyed profound sympathy to the people of Sri Lanka and its government.

In a separate message of condolence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on a three-day official visit in Brunei, also offered deep condolences to the victims’s families.

The premier expressed profound sympathy to the government and the people of Sri Lanka.

Later in the day, it was confirmed that Zayan Chowdhury, grandson of Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and cousin of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had also been killed in one of the blasts.

Zayan had been in Colombo on a holiday with his family.

Zayan’s father Mashiul Haque Chowdhury was also injured in the blast and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital in Colombo, Sheikh Selim’s personal assistant, Imrul Haque, told Dhaka Tribune around 11pm on Sunday.

Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Foreign Minister Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen also issued messages condemning the heinous attack.

Expressing profound sympathy to the people of Sri Lanka, the speaker said: “The series of bomb blasts at religious events were an inhuman fact and it was an attack over world conscience.”

Momen wrote to his Sri Lankan counterpart, where he said: “We are deeply shocked by the attacks causing heavy casualties, including killing of hundreds of innocent people.”

Bangladesh maintains a zero tolerance policy against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and believes that such gruesome violence must be strongly handled to prevent its recurrence, he added.

The foreign minister also gave assurances to stand by the people and the government of Sri Lanka at this tragic time.
