The International Day of UN Peacekeepers will be observed across the globe on Wednesday

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its full support to United Nations peacekeeping operations for establishing and safeguarding world peace.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the assurance in separate messages ahead of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, which will be celebrated on Wednesday.

“I hope Bangladeshi peacekeepers, who are performing their duties with honesty, devotion and professionalism, will be able to continue the trend in establishing world peace, harmony and amity in the days to come,” said President Hamid on Tuesday, wishing the observance of the day a grand success.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh, assured her full support to UN peacekeeping operations for establishing and safeguarding world peace.

“I hope Bangladeshi peacekeepers will contribute more in the future with their highest standard of professionalism, efficiency and sincerity.”

She conveyed her heartiest congratulations to all Bangladeshi peacekeeping members.

Bangladesh is the second largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, and 146 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have so far lost their lives on duty.

At present, it has more than 6,600 military and police personnel deployed in nine peacekeeping missions in Abyei, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Lebanon, Mali, Sudan, South Sudan, and Western Sahara.

On Friday, the United Nations honoured 12 Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives on duty in various parts of the world last year.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on May 29 offers the world a chance to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilian personnels’ invaluable contribution to the work of the organization, and honour the peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948, including 98 last year.

The theme of this year’s day is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”, which marks the upcoming 20th anniversary of the first time the Security Council mandated a peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL in Sierra Leone) to protect civilians.

UN chief for joint efforts to make peacekeeping more effective

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called upon all to work together to make peacekeeping more effective in protecting people and advancing peace.

“UN peacekeeping is a vital investment in global peace and security. But it requires strong international commitment,” he said in a message marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Today, the UN chief said, we honour more than one million men and women who have served as United Nations peacekeepers since the first mission in 1948. “We remember the more than 3,800 personnel who paid the ultimate price.”
