Information minister: Arrangements to air BTV in India complete

Talks for airing private Bangladeshi channels in India underway

Update : 23 Jun 2019, 03:25 PM

Information Minister Hasan Mahmud has said all arrangements have been completed for the state-run channel Bangladesh Television (BTV) to be aired in India.

"The government has finalized an agreement to telecast BTV in India," he said at a press conference on Sunday.

"A team will visit India from June 25 to 27. Upon the return of the team, a date will be fixed on when to air the channel in India."

He said: "Another deal has been made to make Bangladesh Betar available in India."

"Bangladeshis expressed dissatisfaction because our channels were not telecasted in India before. Our channels can now be watched in India."

The minister said: "A working agreement was signed on May 7 for the purpose of broadcasting BTV. The new information and broadcasting minister of India gave final approval on June 19 for this working agreement."

He added: "This means that all arrangements have been completed from government for displaying BTV in India."

Responding to a query, he said Indian viewers can watch BTV, but there is no bar from government side on showing private television channels in foreign country.

“It is not profitable for them to air private channels commercially because cable operators charge high fees. Talks are underway. Since a door has opened, it will open for all very soon," he said.
