Hasan urges EU to share media practices with Bangladesh

EU officials assured the minister of providing all possible support and cooperation

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has requested European Union (EU) to share with Bangladesh their best practices, and guidelines for the print, electronic, and online media.

He made the request while holding a meeting with senior officials of the EU in Brussels on Friday, a press release said on Saturday.

Ambassador of Bangladesh to Belgium Mohammed Shahdat Hossain participated in the meeting, senior officials of the EU from its offices concerned with foreign affairs, strategic communications, and human rights joined the meeting, reports BSS.

At the meeting, the issues of media, online news platforms, the role of social media, and the related challenges were discussed.

The information minister explained to EU how Bangladeshi media has opened up, doubling the number of newspapers, tripling the number of TV channels during the last decade along with the thousands of applications under process for registration for online news platforms.

The EU assured the minister of providing all possible support, and cooperation to Bangladesh, for further strengthening its overall media platform.

EU officials termed Bangladesh as a “fast developing country,” and praised the incumbent government for creating congenial environment for the flourishing of media, the press release further stated.

In the evening, the expatriate community members of Chittagong, living in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, organized a traditional "mezban" (special feast) event in honour of the information minister.

The event, which took place in the port city of Antwerp in Belgium, drew a huge crowd. A cultural function was also arranged.

Bangladesh ambassadors in Belgium, and the Netherlands also joined the event.
