He emphasized the importance of casting votes

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Earl R Miller, urged the people of Bangladesh to  vote in the upcoming Dhaka City elections, and said that the USA will send election observers to oversee the democratic process.

He made the request in speaking to journalists following his meeting with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Monday.

The US ambassador said: "The USA will have election observers, as we did last year for the national elections with other members of the diplomatic corps -- not election monitors, simply people that are out to see how this democratic process is going. We are grateful that we are being allowed to do that."

The envoy expects that the elections will be peaceful, festive, and free.

The USA hopes that the election will be a participatory one.

“We hope that everyone who wants to participate in the elections, those running for office and voters who want to cast their votes are allowed to do so. The important thing is, please go out to vote, for any candidate you choose to vote for," he said.

Miller said he wished to learn more about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during his visit to the Election Commission.

“We are grateful to you (journalists) since you can explain the EVM process and communicate it to voters so they can understand what it is all about.”

He compared the voting rates between US and Bangladesh saying that "the voting rate in Bangladesh is often much higher than in the United States which is something to be very proud of."

Miller added: "It is very encouraging that people on both sides of the political spectrum are looking at each other as competent opponents, but deserving of participating in this contest, and deserving of being a potential leader of the city. As a resident of Dhaka, it is encouraging to hear what I have heard today from the Election Commission."
