The decision is the outcome of Trump administration’s pressure, not a reflection of the will of the people of the two countries, Palestinian ambassador to Bangladesh Yousef SY Ramadan tells Dhaka Tribune in an exclusive interview

The decision of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to normalize relationship with Israel is a betrayal of the Palestinian people and their causes, Yousef SY Ramadan, the ambassador of the State of Palestine in Bangladesh, told Dhaka Tribune on Sunday night.

He also said that the two Arab countries that have dictatorial rule in place took the decision bowing to the pressure from the Trump administration and that the decision has nothing to do with the will of the people of those countries.

“In one word, this (the decision) is betrayal…betrayal of the Palestinian people…betrayal of their causes…betrayal of the principles,” Ramadan told this correspondent in an exclusive interview.

“It is the outcome of the pressure from the Trump administration and does not reflect the will of the people. This kind of decision is only possible by dictatorial governments that ignore the will of the people,” he said.

“This is also an attempt of the current United States administration to impose on us the so-called peace deal that was unveiled in January. We rejected the deal as there was nothing for the Palestinians in that,” he added.

To a question, the ambassador said, “We will never accept the deal and we will fight for our rights. In sha Allah, we will win in the end.”

“Along with our allies, including Bangladesh, we will fight not to allow anyone to change the status quo,” he said, rejecting the notion that normalizing the relationship with Israel will help change the situation for the better for the Palestinians.

When asked about the Palestinian actions against the decision of the UAE and Bahrain, Ramadan said, “We cannot do anything but register our protest. That is what we did. We also recalled our ambassadors from those countries.”

He acknowledged that there are a few more countries that are under pressure from the US government to normalize relationships with Israel and expressed optimism that things will change if Donald Trump loses the election in November.

When asked about the speculation on such a move by Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian envoy said, “I do not think Riyadh will do that. The Saudi position is different from that of the UAE and Bahrain.”

“The support of the people and government has been and is unwavering for the Palestinian people and their causes. I do know that this support will continue in the days, months and years to come,” he said.
