Netherlands determined to ensure justice for Rohingyas

The Netherlands has expressed its firm determination to ensure justice for Rohingyas through the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

In a letter to his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr AK Abdul Momen, Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said that his country is resolute to make sure that Myanmar is held accountable and faces justice for its heinous atrocities against Rohingyas.

The Dutch ambassador to Bangladesh, Harry Verweij handed over the letter to Foreign Minister Dr Momen during a meeting at the state guest house Padma on Sunday, according to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the envoy mentioned that in a joint statement in September 2, the Netherlands and Canada had expressed their all-out support with respect to the genocide case filled by the Gambia. It was also informed that the Netherlands and Canada would file a separate joint application with the ICJ.

Assuring continued Dutch humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas sheltered in Cox's Bazar, the ambassador shared his government's pledge to find a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis.

He laid emphasis on justice and accountability for a lasting solution.

Foreign Minister Dr Momen said that Bangladesh is attaching highest priority to safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas.

He called upon the Netherlands to play an effective role in coordination with other countries belonging to the European Union with regard to creating a conducive environment for quick repatriation.
