Momen - US - New York - briefing - PID
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen briefs media about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Tuesday's overall engagements at a press conference at the Lotte New York Palace in New York, US on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 PID

One of the Bangabandhu killers was extradited earlier from the US as well, says the foreign minister

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said that Dhaka is expecting the extradition of August 15, 1975 carnage convict Rashed Chowdhury from the United States as the process is underway to exhaust legal procedures towards that end.

"We are hopeful that we will bring him [Rashed Chowdhury] back to the country in line with due process of law," he told a media briefing at Lotte New York Palace in New York about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Tuesday's overall engagements.

Asked about the outcome of efforts to repatriate the killer, he said one of the 12 convicts of the Bangabandhu murder trial was extradited before from the US, an instance that made Dhaka hopeful of the return of Chowdhury as well through legal means.

Responding to another question, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said the BNP and its crucial ally Jamaat-e-Islami are carrying out propaganda against the county by appointing lobbyists abroad as well.

He said they have opted for carrying out the propaganda abroad with an ill motive as they have failed to get public support in Bangladesh.

"But their attempts failed in the past, are failing at present and will fail in the future too... we have a lot of evidence to counter their claims," he added.

Alam said the Bangladesh government is ratifying the UN laws and instruments mainly to take democracy to a newer height alongside improving the overall human rights situation.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim, and Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Rabab Fatima were present at the briefing on Tuesday.
