The award will be handed to the recipients on January 2 every year, marking the National Social Welfare Day

The Cabinet has approved the Mother of Humanity Award policy, under which the government plans to honour individuals and organizations making exceptional contribution in humanitarian work with the Mother of Humanity Award every year.

The policy got approved in the weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday, headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BSS reported.

According to the policy proposal, the award will be distributed among the recipients on January 2 every year, marking the National Social Welfare Day, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam told reporters during the post-meeting briefing.

“The award was meant to be named after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reflecting the global recognition she received because of her humanitarian role and social safety programs that aim to change the fate of the downtrodden. But the prime minister preferred to name the award as the ‘Mother of Humanity Award’ instead,” the cabinet secretary said.

As per the policy proposal, the award will be given to individuals and organizations under five categories, awarding them for their contribution to the welfare of the poor, marginalized and elderly people, as well as the oppressed and divorced women, children and physically challenged individuals.

“The award will be the same as other national awards,” Shafiul told reporters, adding that every recipient would get a medal of 25g of 18-carat gold, a “Mother of Humanity” medal, a Tk2 lakh cheque, and a certificate.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speaks with a family of Rohingya refugees at a camp in Cox's Bazar on September last year BSSTwo committees will be in charge of selecting the recipients of the award; one will work at the district level to make a shortlist, headed by the deputy commissioners, and the other will make the final selection, headed by the most senior Cabinet members.

The title “Mother of Humanity” was first coined by the senior leaders of the ruling party for Sheikh Hasina in late 2017, after she decided to let more than 720,000 Rohingyas into Bangladesh territory, escaping a sweeping military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state that began in August 2017 in retaliation of an insurgent attack.

Bangladesh is currently hosting more than a million Rohingya refugees, nearly 66% of whom entered the country following the 2017 military crackdown alone.

At a reception accorded to the prime minister upon her return from New York, US from the UN General Assembly in 2017, where she presented a five-point proposal to resolve the Rohingya crisis, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said: “Thousands of Rohingya people have shelter and a new life only because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina… She took the right decision at the right time… Sheikh Hasina is the mother of humanity.”

At Monday’s meeting, the Cabinet also approved a proposal to declare the third phase of the Info-Govt project as a national priority project, placed by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division.

The project is aimed at expanding the internet services to the union level, maintenance of sustainable internet infrastructure, and upgradation, replacement, operation and settlement of the issues of revenue sharing.
