Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government is preparing a policy to ensure government jobs are available for underprivileged people, members of ethnic groups, and people with disabilities.

She stated this while addressing a function marking the “27th International and 20th National Day of Persons with Disabilities” at the Bangladesh International Conference Centre on Monday.

Sheikh Hasina said: "There was a movement against the quota system, and there was a series of movements a few days later.

“That is why we had to abolish the system. However, now we are preparing a policy wherein there will be a priority for [hiring]  people with disabilities, [from] ethnic groups and [from] underprivileged groups."

The theme for this year's IDPD is “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality.”

Stating that people of Bangladesh might be neglected, she said: "All have to realize that every person of the country is our kith and kin."

She urged the affluent section of society to come forward to ensure the welfare of people with disabilities.

The government is determined to ensure their basic rights, Sheikh Hasina said, adding: "We can utilize the potential they have...we have to build them in such a way so that we can utilize their merit and skill to develop Bangladesh."

"We have to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their dormant talents," she said.

The prime minister said the Rights and Protection of Disabled People Act 2013 and The Protection of Neuron Developmental Disabled Trust Act 2013 were enacted to ensure the welfare of disabled people and the government is implementing those.

Among others, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, President of National Disability Foundation M Saidul Huq, and Social Welfare Secretary Md Zillar Rahman, addressed the event— presided over by Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon.

The prime minister also distributed crests and certificates to individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to society.
