Shiekh Hasina called upon the police to work with dedication and utmost sincerity to turn Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday put emphasis on building a more “people-friendly” police force, and instructed the authorities concerned to resolve cases efficiently and on time to ensure swift justice.

“Imbued with patriotism, you must strive to be people-friendly police by creating confidence and trust among the citizens,” she said while addressing senior police officials at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka on the occasion of Police Week 2019.

The prime minister stated it is a fact that police cases are not completed on time and there are shortcomings in conducting court proceedings smoothly.

“So, you will have to play a special role in monitoring and completing case proceedings promptly,” she added.

Terming terrorism and militancy as a worldwide problem, the prime minister said her government has been able to control the twin monsters.

“But we will have to continue our drives against militancy and terrorism, and we should have a strategy to thwart any possible militant attacks promptly, while increasing intelligence surveillance and training,” she said.

Talking about the framing of the Digital Security Act, the prime minister said many people are speaking against the law.

“But the reality is that the law has been enacted to ensure security of the innocent and common people and protect their rights,” she said.

The prime minister said the law is helping the police in investigation work, as well as identifying and apprehending  criminals involved in cyber crimes.

Hasina praised the role of the police force in rooting out terrorism, militancy and drugs. She also vowed to continue the government’s fight against corruption, alongside combating terrorism and militancy.

“Graft impedes the economic development of the country, while drugs destroy society and country … drug addiction gives rise to snatching and theft, even children can kill their parents for it,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina also stressed on expanding specialized police forces to safeguard mega projects.

The prime minister also laid importance on proper training of police personnel, saying her government is setting up 100 special economic zones where special Industrial Police will be deployed.

She also stressed the need for providing specialized training to other special police units, like the River Police, Airport Police and Tourism Police.

Hasina said police personnel will have to take prompt actions, taking into account the nature of criminal activities, which the training will enable them to do.

In this context, she said necessary steps will be taken to establish a specialized training institute to create special training facilities for the police.

The prime minister mentioned that the police are putting in more effort to maintain a peaceful environment in the country for economic development.

“We have been able to take the country forward economically as you have given that labour with efficiency and for that, I would like to thank you,” she said.

The prime minister called upon the police to work with dedication and utmost sincerity to turn Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country.

She further said more manpower will be added to various units of the police, so that people can get the necessary services.

Sheikh Hasina also addressed the authorities concerned regarding the posting of police personnel to different Bangladeshi embassies and missions.

The prime minister expressed her determination to build a middle-income country in the golden jubilee year of independence, and a developed and prosperous one by 2041.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jabed Patwary, Secretary of the Public Security Division of Home Ministry Mostafa Kamal Uddin, and Additional IGP (Admin) Mokhlesur Rahman also addressed the program.

Besides, DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mian, Deputy Inspector General (Highway) Atikul Islam, DMP Additional Police Commissioner Monirul Islam, Tejgaon Deputy Police Commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarkar, and Rajbari Superintendent of Police Asma Siddika Mily also spoke at the event.
