Some government officials hinted that several prisoners, who were associated with ruling Awami League’s different wings, are also trying to get bail during this time

Government is considering releasing around 3000 prisoners from jail amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Recently The Jail Authority has sent a proposal to the home ministry in this regard.

Inspector General (IG) of prisons, Brig Gen AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said amid the coronavirus outbreak, the home ministry had directed them to prepare a list of prisoners jailed for minor offences or facing trials in different cases.

“We prepared a complete list and sent it to the home ministry, now it is up to the government high ups, as to how many prisoners are going to be freed or granted bail,” IG Mustafa said.

According to jail authority sources, around 1500 prisoners are considered for being released as they have served around 20 years of their prison terms.

According to the jail code, this type of prisoners can receive clemency if the government wishes.

The other 1500 prisoners, out of the 3000 prisoners, are serving jail in some minor cases, some are also physically challenged.

Jail sources said, these type of prisoners can also get clemency, but they need to go through some verification process like checking their prior criminal records.

A top-level government official hinted that some prisoners might be considered for clemency in light of the recent coronavirus outbreak.

This process got pace among government officials after the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from the Prison.

The official said, not only our country but also our neighbouring country India is considering the release of 3,000 prisoners to prevent coronavirus in prison.

India’s highest court has already issued a directive to release prisoners from various prisons in West Bengal by this week for three months.

Meanwhile, some government officials hinted that several prisoners, who were associated with ruling Awami League’s different wings, are also trying to get bail during this time.

Rasel Ahmed Chowdhury, younger brother of suspended Dhaka City South Jubo League President Ismail Chowdhury Samrat told Dhaka Tribune yesterday: “Our brother is facing lung and kidney problems for a long time. Now he is receiving treatment in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Recently his physical condition deteriorated. Our family is praying for his bail as he is at the risk of getting infected with coronavirus in the hospital.”

“If BNP leader Khaleda Zia can get bail, then why not my brother?” Rasel questioned.
