False statements about government officials, law enforcement agencies are likely to destabilize the law and order situation, says the Home Ministry
The Home Ministry has warned of legal action against anyone spreading misinformation and propaganda regarding public servants and security agencies on social media from home and abroad.
In a media statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said paying no heed to this warning will draw action in accordance with the law.
It said recently it has been noticed that false, fabricated, misleading, and provocative statements were being spread about the government, public representatives, officers of the army, police, and other law enforcement agencies via social media from home and abroad.
Such misinformation is likely to destabilize the law and order situation while creating anxiety, hatred and confusion among people, said the ministry statement.
Under the circumstances, the government has decided to take immediate legal measures against such individuals spreading the misinformation and propaganda.
The statement, however, did not mention any specific incident or false information that is making rounds on social media.
