Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working from her official residence, the Ganabhaban, in Dhaka since the country was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in March last year.

Before the country went into lockdown, the last time she was out for an event was on March 17, when she went to Tungipara, Gopalganj to pay homage to her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his birthday.

Since that day, apart from parliament sessions, the only time the prime minister attended an outdoor event physically was on August 15 when she paid tribute to her family members, who were killed on that day in 1975, at their home on Dhanmondi road No 32.

Besides meeting visiting dignitaries at Ganabhaban maintaining health safety rules, she attended all types of events virtually from home because of the pandemic — which has claimed nearly 8,500 lives so far across the country.

However, that is about to change, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana pay homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi on Sunday | PID

Last Thursday, Hasina, also the chief of ruling Awami League, had received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine — little over a week after her younger sister Sheikh Rehana.

After getting the shot, Hasina attended an outdoor event, other than parliament sessions, for the first time on Sunday since last August.

She paid homage to Bangabandhu on the occasion of historic March 7 at the mural of the Father of the Nation at Dhanmondi 32. She was accompanied by Rehana.

Top PMO officials have said that the prime minister has decided to start attending public programs on a limited scale from now on.

“This March, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to attend several events physically, including the events from March 17 to 26 marking 50 years of independence,” a highly placed source at the PMO told Dhaka Tribune.

“At least four VVIP guests are coming to Dhaka to join the celebrations marking Bangabandhu’s birth centenary and the golden jubilee of independence. The prime minister will take part in those outdoor programs,” said the source.

She will visit Bangabandhu’s grave at Tungipara on March 17 too.

Biplab Barua, a special aide to the PM, told Dhaka Tribune: “The prime minister avoided outdoor events over the past year to ensure our safety, since her movement is a big task and many people are involved.”

“I think now the prime minister will start attending some events physically on a limited scale, in line with the health guideline,” added Biplab, who also serves as the office secretary of Awami league.

After the first coronavirus cases were recorded on March 8 last year, 550,330 cases and 8,462 deaths were recorded around the country until Sunday. On the other hand, 503,003 patients also made full recovery.
Bangladesh has so far inoculated over 3.68 million people since a nationwide vaccination campaign started on February 7.
