Is alcohol illegal in Bangladesh?
According to Bangladeshi law, alcohol is prohibited due to the majority of the population being Muslim. But there are provisions for foreigners and non-Muslims to consume alcohol.
How can someone get a permit to drink?
First, they have to visit a doctor (assistant professor or above) for examination. The doctor can either issue a clean bill of health and permit them limited consumption of alcohol or recommend alcohol for medical purposes.
Then, they have to apply to the sub-regional/metro/divisional office of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) for a licence. Applicants will have to submit two passport-size photos, a copy of the National ID card and the medical permit.

How can someone sell liquor in Bangladesh?
First, the Ministry of Commerce has to approve of the selling of liquor in the establishment.
If the ministry approves, then an application has to be made to the sub-regional/metro/divisional office of the DNC with relevant paperwork.
After a rigorous review, the DNC sends the compilation of reports to the Ministry of Home Affairs which can directly issue the approval or refuse, or form a committee to further investigate and then decide.
For large-scale clubs like Gulshan Club or Dhaka Club and three-star hotels and above, the initial request has to be made directly to the director general of the DNC on their own letter pad.
No new licences have been issued over the past three years.
