BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, currently the sole inmate at the old Dhaka Central Jail, has received the first class division status as per the Jail Code, following a court order.
Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin confirmed on Sunday evening that they have ensured the division facilities for the former prime minister.
Earlier in the afternoon, Khaleda’s lawyer Sanaullah Miah had delivered to the prison authorities a copy of the order given by Judge Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court 5.
Sanaullah said the BNP chief should have received the division facilities in line with the Jail Code’s Section 617, but that was not mentioned in the corruption case verdict which sent her to jail.
“Later, we pleaded to the court about this and the court granted it. Then we met the DIG of prisons and submitted the court order,” he said.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal also said that arrangements for Khaleda’s accommodation in the jail were being made following the court’s order.
On Thursday, the same court had convicted Khaleda in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment.
Five other accused in the case, including her son and acting chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk2.10 crore each.
Later, the administration building of the old jail on Nazimuddin Road was declared a sub-jail to accommodate Khaleda.
IG Iftekhar Uddin, however, earlier on Sunday had told reporters that Khaleda was being kept as a general inmate according to the Jail Code.
He also said Khaleda would be given division and other advantages if the court ordered it.
