A team of Supreme Court lawyers sent the legal notice to the DU and RU authorities on Sunday

A 13-member team of Supreme Court lawyers has sent a legal notice to the authorities of Dhaka University (DU) and Rajshahi University (RU), asking them what legal measures would be taken against the alleged Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists who attacked quota reform activists.

The lawyers' body, on behalf of the victim students – Md Faruk Hasan, Md Moshiur Rahman, Jasim Uddin and Rashed of DU and Tariqul Islam of RU – sent the legal notice by post on Sunday to the vice-chancellors, proctors and registrars of the two universities, reported UNB.

The lawyers are: Jyotirmoy Barua, Hasanat Quaium, Anowar Hossain Reza, Kazi Zahed Iqbal, Anik R Haque, Khandaker Shahriar Shakir, Ainun Nahar Siddiqa, Abeda Gulrukh, Humayun Kabir, Reza Islam Riaz, Ariful Haque Rokon, Faria Ferdous and Belayet Hossain.

In the notice, the lawyers asked what legal measures would be taken against the alleged Chhatra League leaders and activists who were involved in the attacks on quota reform activists on the DU campus on June 30 and the RU campus on July 1.

If the authorities of the two universities do not take legal steps against the attackers, the lawyers' panel will take legal action against them, the notice further said.

Speaking to UNB, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said Chhatra League leaders and activists attacked the general students as the latter were demonstrating on the campus seeking reform of the existing quota system in government job recruitment.

Although there were media reports on the attacks, the university authorities have yet to take any legal measures against the attackers, the lawyer further said.

“These incidents go against the legal and justice system of the country. It's clear that the authorities of the universities are not fit for the posts they are holding,” Jyotirmoy added.
