Weapons and explosives were recovered from a building in this alley in Kewa Pashchim Khanda, Sreepur in Gazipur on Sunday, June 24, 2018, in what the police believe was a militant hideout Dhaka Tribune

The drive started around 4am and ended around 3pm with the recovery of three pistols and four bombs

Police have detained a person and recovered firearms and bombs during a raid at a suspected hideout of militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the Kewa Paschim Khanda area of Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila.

Abdur Rahman, 37, of Debiganj upazila in Dinajpur, was detained in the early hours of yesterday from a two-storey building situated at Sreepur municipality’s Kewa Paschim Khanda area, near Maona Alhera Hospital.

The drive had begun around 4am and ended around 3pm with the recovery of three pistols and four bombs, Gazipur’s Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kaliakoir Circle) Shahidul Islam said.

The bombs were later defused by a Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) that came from Dhaka.

Shahidul said the drive was jointly conducted, based on a tip-off, by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police, the Lawful Interception Cell of Police Headquarters and a police team from Bogra, with the assistance from Sreepur police station.

CTTC had information that at least five members of banned outfit JMB were hiding in that house, he said. However, only one was detained from there.

Building owner Rafiqul Islam said a team of law enforcers from the Police Headquarters surrounded his house around 4am and he was told to cooperate during the raid.

Abdur Rahman was detained an hour later, he said. Police also told him that three guns and four bombs were also recovered from Rahman’s flat on the ground floor.

Afterwards, the police team was seen securing the perimeter and waiting for the BDU to arrive, witnesses said.

Rafiqul said Rahman, who had claimed to be a car driver by profession, had moved into the ground floor flat of his building two months ago with his wife and child.
