The strike was called for Sunday by Nizamuddin Asgar Ali College Nationalisation Protection Committee, under the presidency of Abdul Majid Montu.
All offices, banks, schools, colleges and businesses in Sujanagar were closed, while roads were blocked with logs and burning tires. Traffic stalled to a stand-still and people had to walk to their destinations when all vehicles withdrew from the roads in the area.
Protesters composed of teachers, student and guardians had organised a rally at 10am from the college which traversed the major roads in the town before ending at the upazila centre with a protest meeting.
They forced the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and other administrative officers out of their offices and locked them out.
Attendees at the protest meeting included Municipal Mayor and Upazila Awami League (AL) General Secretary Alhaz Abdul Wahab, Municipal AL General Secretary Shahinuzzaman Shahin, AL Joint-Secretary Abdul Kader Rokon, Nizamuddin Asgar Ali College Principal Abdul Halim, Upazila Freedom Fighter Commander Alhaz Abdul Hai, Upazila Chhatra League President Shamim Adam Liton, and Upazila AL General Secretary Milon.
The college was nationalised earlier this year but recently it was replaced with another college. The teachers and students of the college organised the protest demanding the college be renationalised.
