The incident took place between the patient’s family members and intern doctors of SZMC at around 12pm. Later, Abdur Rouf Pasha, the main victim, was taken to police custody at around 3pm.
Hasina Khatun, the victim’s wife, said: “My father in law, Alauddin Sarker, 65, fell sick last night. He was admitted to the Medicine Department of the hospital at around 3am. Later, at around 11am Pasha tried to turn off the fan as his father was shivering. When he asked a doctor for turning off the fan, doctors became furious on him and started hitting him.”
Two female family members of the patient and Pasha’s cousin Masum were harassed by the doctors when they tried to protect the victim, said several witnesses.
A leader of BCL wing at SZMC confirmed the involvement of Al Mamun Rabbi, president of SZMC Chhatra League, and Kutub, an activist of SZMC Chhatra League, in the incident. He said: “BCL is losing its reputation for such leaders and intern doctors.”
Requesting anonymity, a police official said: “The intern doctors took Pasha to the cabin of Brigadier General AKM Masud Ahsan, the director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Later, the doctors attacked him in front of Prof Dr Rezaul Alam Jewel, Prof Dr Zakir, Additional Police Super of Bogra Sadar Circle Sanatan Chakrabarti, Officer-in-Charge of Bogra Sadar police station Emdad Hossain and other higher officials of the hospital because he said he belongs to the area of health minister. Pasha was bleeding when he was handed over to police.”
“The BCL leaders and the intern doctors should be punished for the incident,” he added.
Hakim Khan, a witness, said: “Pasha had no fault. Doctors attacked him without any valid reason and treated him as he was a thief.”
The intern doctors and the BCL leaders could not be reached after the incident took place.
Besides, the inter doctors called a protest in this regard for which the patients are going back from the gate of the hospital without receiving any treatment.
Prof Dr Rezaul Alam Jewel, pro-vice-chancellor of SZMC said: “This is unexpected and we are trying to solve the problem as soon as possible.”
The victims demanded justice and requested attention from the authority concerned in this regard.
