Strike in Chuadanga over jail of bus driver continues
The District Bus and Truck Workers Union of Chuadanga have called an indefinite transport strike in the district protesting bus driver Jamir Hossain’s life sentence in a case filed over the deaths of Tareque Masud, Mishuk Munier, and three others in 2011. The transport strike began around 2pm on Wednesday following the announced verdict. The strike is still being enforced. Union workers have blocked the five main routes of the district from Thursday morning. Passengers have expressed hope the problem will soon be solved. The union leaders are scheduled to meet on Thursday to further discuss the crisis to move forward regarding the transport strike. A Manikganj court sentenced bus driver Jamir Hossain to life in prison in a case filed over the deaths of internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Tareque Masud, journalist and cinematographer Mishuk Munier, and three others in 2011. The fatal accident took place on August 13, 2011, on the Dhaka – Aricha highway at Ghior upazila in Manikganj.
