The Border Guard Bangladesh authorities have deployed their first ever female members at the Hili Border in Dinajpur.
BGB believes this special step of deploying female members beside the existing male will help reduce trafficking of women, children and drug smuggling in this area.
The 13 newly-appointed female BGB members have been serving at the Hili Check post since February 22.
Of them, Selina, Shahida, Asma and Ishma told the Dhaka Tribune that they had initially been stationed at the Joypurhat Battalion after training, and later transferred to the Hili check post.
They hoped to perform efficiently while working with their male colleagues in this profession.

At the check post, the female BGB members are assigned with the task to check the travellers’ passports, register their names and check their bags.
Asked about their thoughts on serving in the BGB, they said that they were proud to be serving the nation and hope to help curb the incidents of trafficking of women, children and drugs.
BGB Hili check post In-charge Commander Subedar Mahbub Alam said that a group of 13 female BGB members had arrived in Hili on February 21, and started their service on February 22.
Mahbub said that it was crucial to have brought the female BGB members on board as it was otherwise not possible for the male BGB members to check the women smugglers and traffickers thoroughly.
He said that now with the female members in their team, they would be able to protect the country's border against smuggling and trafficking more efficiently.
He, however, said that the female BGB members would not be assigned at night due to safety reasons. “They will work in two shifts during the day,” he added.
