After participating in the Akheri Munajat of a Thakurgaon Ijtema on Saturday, Mirza Fakhrul said the BNP had already strongly condemned the astronomical hike in gas prices imposed by the government.
“Everyone should support the February 28 shutdown. The BNP officially endorses the programme of the leftist parties,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul, a former member of parliament from Thakurgaon, participated in a three-day Ijtema held there.
Fakhrul said the masses would have to bear the burden of the increased prices of gas as the hike would push prices of goods and services in general.
On Friday, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) announced the shutdown.
Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the hike on Thursday that would impose a 50% increase in household gas prices over two phases by end of June this year. Transportation sector would be hit with a 33% increase in prices.
