Sundarganj authorities yet to remove razakar names
The names of institutions and roads given after razakars in Gaibandha are yet to be removed although the deadline given by High Court has expired. The High Court on December 6 ordered the LGRD and education ministries to rename the roads and structures named after the collaborators of the Pakistan Army immediately and submit their reports within 60 days. The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah gave the order in response to a petition filed in 2012. The petitioners move the court in December and gave a list of 20 such establishments across the country. A hearing on the matter is set to be held today. The list has the names of three establishments of Gaibandha’s Sundarganj – Belka MC High School and Ramjibon Union Parishad complex – named after razakar Abdul Aziz, and Abdul Jabbar Degree College. Jabbar had taken stance against the 1971 Liberation War. After visiting Sundarganj on Tuesday, it was found that Abdul Jabbar Degree College is yet to remove the name from the building. The college authorities were seen carrying on construction work of its administrative building. When contacted over the phone, Principal Shamiul Islam refused to make any comment, saying he was busy in a meeting. On the other hand, several teachers of MC High School claimed that the college had not been named after former lawmaker Abdul Aziz. The officials at Ramjibon UP complex made a similar claim. They also could not say how the names had appeared on the list. Village police member Amirul Haque said that the Union Parishad had been established in 1940s, and there were no razakars at that time. Sundarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Golam Kibria said that he had been informed about the High Court order, and sent a letter of recommendation to the authorities concerned. “Necessary measures will be taken once we get a response,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.
